What is a travel adapter and why do I need it?
Since electricity has been in most houses across the world since the 19th century - before global travel became so easy and convenient, each country followed its own guidelines while putting up plug ports and electricity lines. It was only after World War II that serious discussions were carried out for Standardization and by then no country was ready to change all of their sockets and lines to follow universal standards.
So, to cut a long story short, every country has different voltages and different shape (square, triangular, round) and number (2 or 3) of socket pins and if you want to use your chargers and other electronic appliances in another country you need to have the correct travel adapter with you.

Do I need to carry a voltage converter or transformer with me?
There are two types of voltages in the world: 110/125V for North America and 220/240V for the rest of the world.
You can find out the voltage range for your device on the back of it or on its charger in the input section.
Most of your Mobile Phones, Laptops, Music Players, electric shavers and kettles, new hair dryers and irons won't need one but your old dryers and irons might. Visit our Voltage Adapter Guide for detailed information.
